Why Fashion Design, Merchandising and Branding?

Fashion is more than trends—it’s where creativity, technology, and business come together. At Missouri State University, our Fashion Design, Merchandising and Branding program prepares students to thrive in a fast-paced, global industry that is constantly evolving.

Missouri State delivers a premier fashion design education, with 2D and 3D industry technology integrated into every design course. From concept development to final presentation, students use industry-relevant 3D tools to design, visualize, and refine products—mirroring how today’s fashion industry works.

Students develop in-demand technical skills while strengthening creativity and business knowledge. You’ll choose an emphasis in fashion design or merchandising and branding, allowing you to tailor your degree toward creative product development or the business and strategy side of fashion.

Through hands-on projects, industry-driven coursework, and real-world problem solving, students gain experience designing and merchandising products that respond to changing consumer, brand, and market needs. Study abroad opportunities broaden your global perspective, while internships and strong industry connections—supported by our faculty and alumni network—help you graduate with experience and confidence.

Whether your interests are in 3D digital fashion design, private-label product development, merchandising strategy, or brand storytelling, Missouri State equips you with the skills to make an impact in the fashion industry.

The best of both worlds

Are you both creative and technical? Do you like to predict trends and manage businesses? A Bachelor of Science in Fashion Design, Merchandising and Branding is a great way to find your place as a business leader within the dynamic world of fashion. You may choose an emphasis in either fashion design or merchandising and branding.

Fashion design emphasis

We offer the option to specialize in digital design. As a product developer, you'll take your ideas from the drawing board to the runway. Past graduates with this emphasis are successfully employed as pattern makers, product developers and visual merchandisers.

Merchandising and branding emphasis

An emphasis in merchandising and branding unites your ability to transform your design ideas into works of art and offers you the opportunity to learn about the following:

  • Current and future industry trends
  • Product development
  • Marketing and fashion promotion
  • Show production
  • Merchandising math
  • Retailing
  • Textiles
  • Entrepreneurship

Merchandising graduates are successfully employed as buyers, retail managers, fashion coordinators and business owners.
